Key changes coming for fire door classification

Last month we got important news about an upcoming change to regulations for fire doors. It will have a big impact in the future, so it is a good idea to have a closer look now and plan ahead. Luckily, there is plenty of time for property owners, responsible peoples, and the market itself to adapt. Let’s dive in, then if you want some help with fire door inspections in Stockton or other parts of Teesside, we can help.

The change

Fire door inspections StocktonUntil now, fire doors had to comply with British Standard BS 476. It had two key parts to determine that products had the respective level of resistance to fire (476-22) and smoke penetration (476-31-1).

However, from September 2029 we will move to a European Standard for the classification of fire doors, EN 13501. Crucially, BS EN 1634-1 will become the standard for fire resistance.

The major change is how certification works for product variations. With BS 476, an assessment procedure was necessary for key things like door size, glazing, and hardware. Under BA EN 1634-1, there are direct application rules to ensure compliance and certification. There are also specific EXAPs for certain types of door, including timber. It means they require additional testing.

The impact

As one of the top names for fire door inspections in Stockton, we appreciate the move will have an effect in the future. Luckily, there is an important thing to note for property owners; you don’t need to rush out to replace all fire doors. Any that comply with the current standard and remain in proper working condition are safe to continue to use. The only thing to think about is from 2029 all new doors will need BS EN 1634-1 certification.

Fire door manufacturers will have to make bigger changes, hence the five year transition period. They will need to review their product range, identifying those that will require new certification. Then, it’s a wise idea to review current reports against the BS EN 1634-1 standard with a qualified expert; they may comply or changes may be necessary.

The biggest change for manufacturers is they will need to create a new testing programme for products under the requirements of BS EN 1634-1. It must generate the required evidence to allow certification.

Why the change?

Some stakeholders are questioning the decision to change to the European Standard. Ultimately, it has a number of positives. Crucially, the EN standard is recognised internationally. Even better, it has a rules based singular system to prevent potential ambiguity and failings with product variations. The goal is to improve standards and fire safety.
