At the end of August we got the most recent fire protection and prevention statistics for England. They cover the year up to March 2025. Details are from Fire Rescue services (FRAs), as well as their various partners. We want to have a look at some of the most noteworthy stats here. Then, if you want any help with fire protection in Middlesbrough, we offer exceptional services for various clients.
Visits
The first stat is there was a 2.9% increase in home fire service visits (HFSVs) in the year. It was slightly up on 5 years ago as well.
Even more importantly, there was a bigger focus on visits to vulnerable households. A massive 85% of HFSVs were targeted at a household where at least one occupant was over 65, suffering a disability, or with another kind of risk factor. This is the highest total ever.
During HFSVs, the fire services or respective partner can provide bespoke advice and interventions for occupants. One of the most common steps is to install smoke alarms. There can also be recommendations such as moving furniture to reduce fire risk.
Fire safety audits
The fire services and their partners are also responsible for conducting audits in various properties, including shops, schools, care homes, and buildings with sleeping accommodation. We can help many clients with these properties, offering fire protection in Middlesbrough and other parts of the Tees Valley.
Overall, during the year there was a 2.4% increase in audits over the previous year. It was 5.4% higher than 2020. The biggest increase was audits of flats.
The findings of the audits were 58% satisfactory, similar to the preceding period. However, it remains the lowest success rate since 2011. Some may feel this is an indication of a decline standards, but it is more likely that the focus is now on properties where there is a higher risk.
The type of property with the highest percentage of satisfactory findings was further education (74%). At the other end, houses converted to flats had 59% unsatisfactory.
According to the stats, the most common reason for an unsatisfactory audit was issues with fire exits and evacuation routes. It was down significantly over the previous year, but is still the biggest problem. Other regular issues include maintenance and lack of a risk assessment.
